Paralyzed Rats Walk Near Normal

scientists Mary Bartlett Bunge, Ph.D. and Damien Pearse, Ph.D. announced today the results of their
research that showed paralyzed rats regained 70% of their normal walking function! The study tested an innovative
treatment that combined Schwann cell grafts with injections of cyclic AMP and rolipram. This triple combination
strategy saved axons from dying and resulted in more axon growth within the Schwann cell grafts. The triple-treated
animals had a 500 percent increase in nerve fibers in the graft area.
